BMI’s fellowship programs include the first-ever U.S. City of Asylum program, which offers refuge, community, and career support to distinguished literary writers in exile; the Diana L. Bennett Fellowship for visiting writers; the Eleanor Kagi Foundation Fellowship in Literature and Medicine; a residential fellowship at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress; fellowships for PhD students in UNLV’s creative writing international program; and faculty fellowships for scholars at UNLV’s College of Liberal Arts.

BMI partners with a diverse array of institutions, beginning with the Department of English at UNLV and the students and faculty of its creative writing program. Other partners include The Writer’s Block and KNPR in Las Vegas, as well as the Library of Congress; the City of Asylum program in Pittsburgh, PA; McSweeney’s; and the International City of Refuge Network.

Pursuing creative writing requires resilience. Unfortunately, I’ve had people tell me I couldn’t write or I wasn’t ready to submit my work for publication. It was discouraging at first, but then it stoked a fire in me to push myself and prove them wrong. That’s how I connected with , who is a published creative writer and director of communications in UNLV’s Division of Research and Economic Development. She provided me with guidance on creative writing and publishing processes.

UNLV Creative Writing Courses - University of Nevada – Las Vegas

Each fellow in the nine-month writing program receives $50,000, an office, computer, and access to UNLV's Lied Library. The fellowships allow the writer to work in an uninterrupted environment, discuss their works in a public forum, and mentor students in UNLV's nationally recognized creative writing programs. They will start in the fall.
