"I'm Mr. Wolf. I solve problems." - Mr. Wolf

Let me tell you about my job, and to do so, let’s use Pulp Fiction as our frame of reference. Are you familiar with Mr. Wolfe? He solves problems. Mr. Wolfe meets the characters Jules and Vincent who have a problem and are desperately in need of a Problem Solver to get them out of a very sticky and messy situation; literally. The scene is a perfect screenplay for my job. You see, I’m the Mr. Wolfe of Information Technology problems and I’ve seen them all. None quite as bad as this scene in Pulp Fiction you hope, but in some cases, not too far off. Many are scarily similar in their intensity and the ability to make anyone of you ask:

My name is Mr Wolf! I solve problems...

Mr. Wolfe (me): You’re… Jimmie, right? This is your house?
Jimmie (customer): Sure is.
Mr. Wolfe (me): I’m Winston Wolfe. I solve problems.
Jimmie (customer): Good, we got one.
Mr. Wolfe (me): So I heard. May I come in?
Jimmie (customer): Uh, yeah, please do.

I wish I could share real-life stories with you. I really do. I suspect, no, I know, if I were to do so I’d end up in court. These stories are the room captivating tales that when delivered, with the names changed to protect the innocent, mesmerize cocktail, happy hour or other gatherings resulting in gasps of disbelief and gut wrenching, howling laughter. What is found when I turn over these corporate rocks is almost impossible to believe. To protect the innocent, we’ll use Mr. Wolfe to relay what the job or a corporate Problem Solver really looks like. There is also something subtler that also comes with Mr. Wolf. He is different than any character to that point in the movie, be it in manner, image, language or in how he sees things to solve problems. His off handed request for a cup of he smelled in the kitchen as he is inspecting the car, its contents, and clarifying mechanical issues is a reflection of this. There is something with these three words that say, . A problem solver can do what others cannot... they solve those problems or those problems of our own creation, and this is why we like Mr. Wolf. A very fine observation of the unique qualities of an effective problem solver. You are the ultimate problem solver, Graham, so you would definitely know what that's about. The title of your piece reminded me of the game my kids used to play during their swimming lessons. The kids would all call out, "What time is it Mr. Wolf?" and Mr. Wolf would yell out, "Lunchtime" and all the kids would swim away. That, of course, has nothing to do with anything. LOL

Great analogy and examples. I know on the playground we all secretly wished Mr. Wolf would show up and handle the bully. I think as we age the consequences become to large to play Mr. Wolf, secretly though we live on the cusp of wanting to play the role.

On a serious note when the issues get larger than us we do look for a Mr. Wolf to problem solve. Critical thinking, or boiling down to the few choices we may have is a difficult process for many. Mr. Wolk may be crude, but this makes him/her no less effecient.
