A unique program in the Craig School of Business enables alumni and business seniors to become entrepreneurs by enrolling in MGT 417, an applied entrepreneurship class that involves writing and presenting a business plan for a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (RMCF) store. A panel of judges listens to the presentations and selects the winner(s). Typically, more than one store is awarded each year. After winning the competition, students attend an 8-day intensive training class in Durango, Colorado, at RMCF headquarters and then take ownership of their new store. The winners have five years to repay their loans. This unique national program is featured on the Innovation Resource Center website of AACSB International. Students and alumni who are accepted into the program enroll in the applied entrepreneurship class, which focuses on creating a business plan for a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Store. At the end of the class, the students present their business plans to a panel of business leaders, who then select store winners. In the past, Craig has provided operating capital; now, the stores will be financed by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. The store owners agree to repay the loan within five years, and to contribute money back to the Craig School of Business as their businesses become profitable. Craig, Missouri Western faculty members, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and members of the Craig School Advisory Council provide mentoring and logistical support to the store owners.

This is the second year of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory’s partnership with NNU to support this entrepreneurial competition. Last year’s winner owns and operates a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory location in Petaluma, California.

"They shared our entrepreneurial spirit"

When two childhood friends from England came up with the 'crazy' idea of starting a chocolate company, they knew they were on to something special; they just needed the funding to make their dream happen.

And so in 1999, after a year of business planning, and with the backing of Bankwest, The Margaret River Chocolate Company opened its doors to their very first customers.

"On our first weekend we predicted 150 people, but 4,000 turned up. They stripped the place bare!"

It took just 18 months before business partners Martin and Patrick were able to expand, opening a second factory in WA's Swan Valley.

Additional support from Bankwest Business has allowed for further expansion into the gourmet foods market, along with the launch of Providore -- a cellar door selling award-winning wines.

Hear from Martin and Patrick about their experience in the chocolate business and how Bankwest Business backed their business growth and success in just 18 months!
