Good business planning incorporates strategic and operational plans.

Visionary and creative leaders are great at developing new technologies or innovative business models but have difficulty turning those ideas into long-term businesses that generate profits, satisfy customers, and operate efficiently. A company must have a well-developed operational plan and financial forecast in its business plan to move from promising startup to solid performer. As I discussed in my previous posts in this series, a strong business plan includes the following elements:

However, with that conclusion in mind, we rush to add that it is essential that the operations section be written selectively and concisely. Simple or obvious operational details do not need to be meticulously described, if at all. What is presented should be written succinctly, and always with the needs of the business plan reader in mind. A good rule to follow in writing the operations section is "when in doubt, don't include it," and don't be afraid to use the phrase "more details are available upon request" in this section too. A short, concisely written operations section that shows you have put considerable thought into how your business will create value will be interesting to the reader and demonstrate that you are a capable businessperson.

A wise old business philosopher once said: "Failure to plan is planning to fail." And while it is important for entrepreneurs and small business owners to develop a business plan for their venture, an operational plan is just as important.

An operational plan describes how the company or organization will achieve the goals, objectives and strategies described in the larger strategic or business plan. The operational plan includes all actions that are needed to meet the strategic plan objectives, personnel responsible for carrying out the described actions, and the timing, costs and KPIs (key performance indicators) that align with these actions. The operational plan must be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure that the company is meeting outlined objectives.Beginning with the operations section, the scope of the business plan changes. Previous sections of the business plan, especially mission statement, value proposition, target markets, and competitive positioning, mostly focused on the strategic aspects of developing your business and writing the business plan. Although we couldn't do the hard work of writing the business plan itself, previous lessons have provided specific guidelines and assignments to help you do so.
